Material Density in Workshop Calculations

The practical idea

Density is mass per unit volume. Once a part's volume is known, multiplying by density gives an estimated mass. This makes density tables useful for stock purchasing, handling, freight and early design.

What changes the real result?

Published densities are approximate because alloy composition and manufacturing condition vary. Finished parts may also include holes, welds, coatings and attachments.

1. Confirm the units, material and operating conditions.
2. Use a suitable formula or reference as a starting point.
3. Compare the estimate with manufacturer data and applicable standards.
4. Measure the real result and record any corrections for repeat work.
